To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, we talked to McCann & Partners Senior Sustainability Consultant Poppy Reynolds about her experiences in the industry and how she feels we can encourage more women in the field of engineering.
Describe a typical day at McCann and Partners for you in your role.
A typical day involves collating and validating evidence against the BREEAM and HQM criteria and holding BREEAM/HQM workshops with design and construction teams to guide them through the BREEAM process. I also carryout additional services such as Life Cycle Assessments.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?
I was involved in a couple of refurbishment projects which inspired me to study Building Surveying at university. I then completed modules during my undergraduate degree on BREEAM and other sustainable assessments and then was offered a job in BREEAM with an industry partner.
What obstacles/ challenges, if any, have you faced along the way?
Day-to-day the greatest challenge is keeping projects which can run for years up to date with the governing body’s standards.
How can we encourage more women into the industry?
By creating respectful cultures in industry and normalising women in classically male-orientated roles.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Never forget to be confident.
